Ice Hotel Sweden

There are parts of Europe that are missed off many a wish list when the British plan holidays and breaks away. Much of the time we hear about an experience that should not be missed, but its recommendations like the one below that remain in the forefront of our minds. The Ice Hotel Sweden, which is a superb destination should you wish to travel to Sweden, is one of those not-to-be-forgotten memories. Once you have read about the amazing Ice Hotel Sweden it may just be that one place that isn't forgotten.

Trendy, cool and sophisticated The Ice Hotel Sweden was a refreshing idea. The hotel is based in Jukkasjärvi which is located in Swedish Lapland. The freezing temperatures mean that the River Torne which the hotel is situated near is a metre thick with ice due to it's lazy and smooth flow through the area. That in itself is a great sight for most as it's rarely seen, especially in the UK! That icy river is exactly what makes up Ice Hotel – Sweden has normally mild temperatures, though this far North the winter months are extremely cold.

During summer, the River Torne's movement is fast and furious. The river is full of wildlife and white water, its rapids crashing around it. Its a rough river and seeing it in the summer months makes it very hard to believe that the hotel can be completely altered come winter. As soon as winter arrives, with average temperatures in January being around minus 15ºc, the movement of the water slows and this is when the ice layer forms. The unique patterns that the water forms as it solidifies lends itself, temporarily, to the hotel when it's architects reform it to build the most amazing hotel we have ever seen.

When the creation comes about, ice statues and sculptures adorn the Ice Hotel, Sweden architects and other talents being completely responsible for the rebuild each year. Surprising though it is, you can book to stay here and experience a night for yourself. Be aware though, no matter how cold it is outside the hotel temperature is no lower than minus 8ºc. That is still cold to many people so remember, when booking Ice Hotel, Sweden is cold in winter and you will need thermals, hats and gloves suitable for such temperatures.

Beds at the Sweden Ice Hotel are made up of snow and ice, as are the chairs and desks. Beds are covered with reindeer skins for warmth and comfort, and then thermal sleeping bags are placed over this for you to sleep in. The whole idea is romantic and unusual but the Ice Hotel gets busy and quickly booked so reserve your night/s early. You will sleep in thermals but who can miss out on an opportunity to stay in the Ice Hotel Sweden and to experience such a unique break?

Sweden History Tip #1

Always remember to carry a map of Sweden when you visit, mark on it the whereabouts of your hotel and the full address and keep it with you when you travel. Mark down landmarks near the hotel if you plan to walk so that you can easily spot the direction of your residency for the time of your stay.

Sweden History Tip #2

If you plan to travel to Northern Sweden to experience the Northern Lights and the Ice Hotel, pack accordingly and remember warm clothing, especially in winter months. Thermal underwear is highly recommended on top of hats, scarves and a couple of pairs of gloves – there's nothing worse than packing just one pair and losing one glove!
